Culture

This is the stairway to the beautiful theater where operas and plays are performed.

This is a (dark) photo of the theater's interior balcony seats.

This is a beautiful, very old, cathedral downtown.  The interior is quite impressive.

This is the San Idelfonso Cathedral. It is the oldest cathedral in North or South America.

The Spanish came to Mexico in 1514 and conquered the Mayan people. They used the stones from Mayan pyramids to build the cathedral. Though the cathedral is over 400 years old, mass is still held daily and seven times on Sunday.

Merida's love of history and culture is always evident. There are free public performances almost every night. This local group sang beautiful serenades, which is the popular style of music in Merida. (Meriachi groups aren't found here - they're mainly in western Mexico).

A wonderful dance group performed traditional Yucatan dances at the downtown plaza near our hotel.
