What books should kids be reading?

In 1999 we attended a Homeschool Conference near Los Angeles Ca.  During the conference speaker after speaker had the same basic message.  If kids read great books they will develop great minds.

Here's an analogy.  When I went to elementry school the basketball hoops were lower than standard, after all we were little kids.  When Our older children went to elementary school the baskets were regulation hieght.  We were told that if kids learn to shoot for a shorter basket they will grow up with the skill of shooting to short baskets.

This is also true for setting life goals and reading.  We no longer buy abridged versions of the great classics.  We look for books about the great leaders of history, books about strong characters and leaders, books that expand vocabulary and stretch the mind.

Reading is the single most important activity to become educated.  If you want an education, read.  Its as simple as that.

The boys are expected to read each day, Cheryl reads aloud while we drive across the contry, and we use audio tapes for the boys to read long with.  Audio tapes are a great way to help young children read more difficult books such as those written in an old english style.
